Notre Dame of Maryland University’s online M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program provides educators with the knowledge and experience to pursue careers teaching English as a second language to students of all ages. Whether you’re earning your master’s in TESOL online for initial K–12 certification, are interested in an M.A. in TESOL for post-secondary education, or are ready to earn a PM certification in TESOL to specialize your skills, you can explore the latest approaches as you gain hands-on training in teaching English language learners.

Coursework for the online master’s in TESOL is delivered in a flexible online format and features a strong focus on pedagogy, cross-cultural communication, and second language teaching methods. This program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, so you can be sure you’re gaining valuable skill sets for the modern classroom. Graduates with an online master’s in TESOL or PM-certification are qualified for in-demand careers teaching English as a second language and helping students thrive.

Admissions Requirements

  • Complete all sections of the application
  • Submit official transcript(s) for all undergraduate and graduate coursework. Transcripts submitted for admissions review purposes must be from an accredited institution.

  • 3.0 GPA for all undergraduate and graduate coursework
  • Three letters of recommendation (one personal, two professional)

Praxis Test Scores and 3.0 GPA Requirement

  • Praxis test scores are required only for students entering the Initial K–12 Certification program.
  • If a student has a 3.0 GPA or higher, test scores are not required for admission. All students will submit Praxis CORE scores prior to student teaching.
  • Students with a lower GPA need passing Praxis CORE scores, 24 ACT score or 1180 SAT score for admission.

Other Notes

  • Essay requirement is waived if an applicant has earned a previous master’s degree.
  • Letters of recommendation are waived if an applicant is a full-time teacher or school employee.


An admission essay is required to enroll in the online master’s in TESOL program. Essays must be submitted with all transcripts and GRE scores when applying for enrollment.

  • What are your goals and objectives in pursuing graduate study in your chosen program?
  • How have your experiences (academic, professional, and/or personal) prepared you to successfully complete this program?

Tuition And Financial Aid

  • Tuition: $550 per credit
  • Registration/Technology Fee (nonrefundable): $185 per term
